“Amagami SS” Anime Review
Amagami SS is the animated adaptation of Amagami which is a Japanese dating sims game for the PS2, the series is the spiritual successor of another dating sims game Kimikiss. Amagami SS aired in Japan from July 1, 2010 to December 23, 2010 and consisted of 26 episodes plus two OVA episodes that came with the ordered the first six Blu-rays/DVDs.
The series structures differently then most anime series, it knows that the story came from a dating sims game so it can’t really follow a singular story since the game branches out into a different story as you progress. That is why the anime divides the series into 6 four episodes arcs with each one having some type of conclusion.
Now the anime pretty much starts about the same way each time with miner differences when it is retold but this is the gist of it. Junichi Tachibana had his heart broken two years ago by a girl who stood him up on a date on Christmas Eve. As he closes his heart to love he starts to encounter with one of six girls from his school: Haruka Morishima, Kaoru Tanamachi, Sae Nakata, Ai Nanasaki, Rihoko Sakurai, or Tsukasa Ayatsuji, will he finally open his heart again and find love with on of the girls?
For the most part Amagami SS is a decent anime with cute female leads, it’s a nice vanilla anime and with the way it is structured you don’t have to watch the entire series but just choose who’s story you would like to watch. I give Amagami SS a (7/10) as a whole.
Music: Amagami SS has 2 different openings and 8 ending themes.
First opening Theme: “I Love” by azusa from episode 1 to 12 – ( it’s good 7.5/10 )
Second opening Theme: “Kimi no Mama de” – “Just Being You” by Azusa from episode 13 to 26 – ( Mehh at best 4/10 )
Score for each episode –
Episode 1-4 Haruka Morishima Arc: She is the schools idol and is known for rejecting any boy who asked her out, Junichi is no exception and gets rejected too. But as they become friends he asked her again which apparently no one has ever tried, this time she says yes. So begins a very strange relationship between a childish girl who wishes to be spoiled and misses her dog, and a boy who obliges her every needs.
I enjoyed this first story arc, it was funny, cute, and at time just plain weird but in a good way. (8/10)
First ending Theme: “Kimi no Hitomi ni Koishiteru” – “I Love Your Eyes” by Shizuka Ito from Episode 1-4 – ( It’s good and up beat 7/10 )
Episode 5-8 Kaoru Tanamachi Arc: On the way back from getting his heart broken 2 years ago, he crosses Kaouru his childhood friend. As time progress they start to realizing that they have feelings for each other.
I truly like Kaoru character design, her arc is nice but the one grip I did have was the sub-plot with her mom dating a man she never meet. (7.5/10)
Second ending Theme: “Kitto Ashita wa…” – “Surely Tomorrow Will…” by Rina Sato from episode 5-8 – ( It’s nice 6.5/10 )
Episode 9-12 Sae Nakata arc: Sae Nakata is a fist year student who is a very shy, well endowed, mousei girl who also happens to be Junichi’s little sisters friend. Sae wants to get a part-time job but is nerves about talking to boys so she gets help from Junichi, as things progress they start falling in love with each other.
Sae is a cute character and her arc is decent (6.5/10)
Third ending Theme: “Anata Shika Mienai” – “I Can’t See Anything But You” by Hiromi Konno from episode 9-12 – ( Cute but can be a little annoying 5.5/10 )
Episode 13-16 Ai Nanasaki arc: Another of Junichi’s sister’s friend and classmate, she has a cool and calm disposition who is also part of the schools swim team. Thinking that Junichi is a pervert she teases him until she starts having feelings for him.
This arc wasn’t as interesting as the previous arcs and can be quite boring (5/10)
Fourth ending Theme: “Koi wa Mizuiro” – “Love is Colored Like Water” by Yukana from episode 13-16 – ( It’s ok 6/10 )
Episode 17-20 Rihoko Sakurai arc: A friend of Junichi, Rihoko is a cheerful, clumsy, dipsy girl who is a little insecure about her curves. Despite always reading dieting books from the school library she loves to eat sweets. As part of the schools tea club she will be the last member of the club unless she gets a new recrute, that’s where Junichi comes in to help her out. Realizing that she likes Junichi she hopes that in time her feelings will reach him.
((WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD)) So I do have a grip with this arc, Rihoko is probably the cuties, funnies character of the series; she got shafted in the end. While just about all of the series characters got to have a happy ending with Junichi, she did not. The arc started the same way as the once before and it’s looked like it was going to end the same way, but her arc concludes with them not getting together but instead a (I hope my feelings will reach him someday). The series portray Rihoko as a girl who loves to eat and is always trying to loose weight, I believe that because this character is portrayed as “fat” she will not have the happy ending. Aside from the crappy ending I did enjoy this arc (8/10)
Fifth ending Theme: “Koi wa Aserazu” – “Love is Calm” by Ryoko Shintani from episode 17-20 – ( Mehh it’s cute 5/10 )
Episode 21-24 Tsukasa Ayatsuji arc: She is Junichi’s class representative, she is a very hard worker and excels academically but that is not her true nature. the real Tsukasa is a cunning girl who likes to manipulate her victims into doing her bidding.
While this arc was decent I enjoyed Tsukasa other personality better. (7/10)
Sixth ending Theme: “Nageki no Tenshi” – “The Angel of Lamentation” by Kaori Nazuka from episode 21-24 – ( Mehh 4/10 )
Episode 25 – Risa Kamizaki arc Special: This episode was quite a surprise, It was a type of “what if”. The episode is about a girl named Risa Kamizaki who confesses her love to Junichi but she doesn’t want anybody to know that they are going out. There is quite a surprise in this stand alone episode and for that reason I give it a (8/10).
Seventh ending Theme: “Koi no Yukue” – “Love’s Course” by Mai Kadowaki from episode 25 – ( Not interesting 3/5 )
Episode 26 – Miya Tachibana arc Special (DVD release): This was a fun episode with the very funny and adorable Miya Tachibana, Junichi’s little sister. (8/10 )
Eighth ending Theme: “Suteki na Aru Hi” – “Nice Day” by Kana Asumi from episode 26 – ( Mehh 4/10 )
